DiscussionsMeltdown Covers?
Mar 21, 10:24 AM
J.Garcia

OK folks… let’s hear it.

What song would make you just lose your shit if Flow covered it @ Meltdown?

I’m looking forward to a few “lesser known” bands to be showcased. Well, no matter WHAT they play it will be lesser known than last year. I mean it doesn’t get bigger than than The Beatles, LZ, and Floyd, right?

Since the boys have a “thing” with Wilco lately, I would love to hear Walkin’ from Sky Blue Sky.

Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John…… 2 words……. E… PIC!

Saturday the 9th will be the 13th anniversary of Jerry’s death (wowthatmakesmefeelold) I think it would be great to give the Ol’ Grateful Dead a nod. I mean, would there BE a Meltdown if it weren’t for them? Shakedown Street @ Chumley’s was cool but it’s a new era…… PLAY DEAD!

So, what songs do YOU want to hear?

In particular, what Dead song?

So, what songs

Mar 21, 10:26 AM
J.Garcia

Oh… btw, my pick for a Dead tune is Help>Slip>Franklin’s.

I mean……. C’MON. how cool would that be?

Mar 21, 11:58 AM
Rhea

fuck the covers! I’d much rather hear more new stuff! BUT if they must (and i know there’s no stopping them) then how about some talking heads “take me to the river . . . drop me in the water . . .”

but really – can we leave the classic rock alone for awhile? the best way to show you can rock is by rockin your own stuff! you can always be a cover band in 20 years, when that’s the best gig in town. right now, just keep the new stuff coming.

Mar 21, 12:09 PM
crusty

rock on rhea!

Mar 21, 12:33 PM
J.Garcia

I agree Rhea. But one thing I (and I’m sure I’m not alone) look forward to is the new covers unveiled @ MD.

I had mentioned Take me to the River last year. good choice.

Mar 21, 02:23 PM
Gerry

Wilco- Spiders they would crush that song.

Mar 21, 05:10 PM
Puffy

Chillywater from Widepsread Panic would melt my face

Pusherman would be a fitting cover too

Mar 22, 09:06 AM
Jacob

I just dont see Flow doing either of those Panic songs. I tried to imagine it and just cant see it. This coming from someone who loves Panic as much as I love Flowmotion.
I agree with Rhea, fuck the covers! Untill Flowmotion plays a couple nights in a row AND runs out of their own material to play, stick with originals!!

Mar 22, 09:52 AM
Becka

Rhea, as always I agree. I can not wait to hear the new stuff, and some old but ‘good’ies!

Mar 22, 05:24 PM
AndyP

I think “Take me to the River” is an Al Green song, and you know the rule…no covers of covers!

Mar 22, 06:01 PM
Rhea

yeah,my bad – pretty sure it is an al green tune. regardless – it would be a great meltdown song!

Mar 23, 04:56 AM

Pusherman isn’t a Panic song, but a Curtis Mayfield song and I think it would be more likely covered than Chilly. But the question was what would make you lose it if Flow covered it, and any Panic covers would freak me the fuck out!

I agree that they don’t need to do covers though. But I love em!

Mar 23, 04:58 AM

While not a cover, I have often wondered if they will ever play Plant The Seed again. That would be sick!

Mar 23, 12:14 PM
Jacob

Bring back Funky JAQ!!

Mar 23, 12:35 PM
Shelbi

Well, I do think that something should be mentioned about the anniversary of Jerry’s passing. It does make me feel old. I can’t believe it has been so long. I can still remember the heavy heart that I had especially when I had to send my tickets back for the next tour and I would’ve had a b-day show. Wow! So much has changed in the jamband scene since then.

As far as Dead songs:
friend of the devil
crazy fingers
Shakedown Street!!!!!!
Eyes of the World
Vicitim or the Crime (I know not many heads like this song but I do and I think Flowmotion would do a great job with this one)

Other covers that would be cool:

“Black Betty” by Ramjam
The Magnum PI theme song
“The End” by the Doors
“Wish you were here” by Pink Floyd (such a simple song but so profound that it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up)
“Wild Horses” Rolling Stones
“Iron Man” Black Sabbath
“Rainy Day Woman” Bob Dylan

These would be cool but really I come to see Flowmotion to hear their music. Covers are a cool way to spice up a set especially if it is a song that everyone can sing along with but I really like the originals and would miss them if there were too many covers squeezed in. Interesting discussion though.

Meltdown covers have always been SICK and definatly left long standing unique memories of each year….Chili Peppers, Steely Dan, Phish, Huey Lewis, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Janes Addiction. Fanatastic memories. Keep em comin’

As far as Dead covers, I definatly agree about Shakedown Street.

IMO the best shit ever would be to open Meltdown with “Welcome to the Jungle”

Nothing could rock harder. Disturbingly good things would happen. Place would blow up.

Mar 24, 04:12 AM
J.Garcia

Bringing back Funky Jaq is a GREAT idea.

Mar 24, 08:52 AM

Hell yeah!!!! I totally think opening up Meltdown weekend with “Welcome to the Jungle” would kick total ass!!! Well, that or Iron Man. LOL!!!!!!!!! Gotta love the 80’s cock rock!!!!!!

Peace,
Shelbi

Joe’s Garage.

Mar 24, 08:58 PM

I think it would also be cool if Vicci Martinez joined onstage and did a Donna song with the band. I also think having DSO play would be a whole lot better!

Shelbi

Foreplay/Long Time….

….Phish did it.

Jens and I have some stories about that song, I tell ya.

Keep ‘em coming… and I’ll tell you if Phish did it or not.

Apr 1, 01:04 PM
Fuck Phish

What does it matter anyways if Phish already covered a song(thousands), Flow covered an entire Phish album. I would rather them do a cover thats already been done vs. pushing stereotypes of jambands. Oh wait! What a great idea lets cover some dead……

Apr 2, 06:15 AM
J.Garcia
Hillman, You argue for the sake of arguing even though you agree with me. I only bring up the covered covers becauseI think it’s important to acknowledge that something has been done before when looking to bust out a cover at an event as special as Meltdown.

Phish covered a lot of songs (thousands might be a BIT of an exageration) but there are SHITLOADS of songs that they DIDN’T cover. Yeah, Foreplay/Long Time would be cool, but Phish did it in a very poignant and special setting and if I heard Flow do it, it just wouldn’t be a unique experience. But obviously, that is me personally.

Yeah, I remember that Halloween show VERY WELL. I was there. Where were YOU? I think you were still pooping your diapers in 2001. Fucking NOOB.

Oh, and you know a Help>Slip> Frank would OWN FACES so don’t even KID.

Internet wars……Internet wars…….

Internet wars…….Internet wars……..

Apr 3, 10:20 AM
J.Garcia

Here’s the thing. Andy has known for a while how “over” the whole jam band thing I am. He is too. (Shit, all he’s listening to lately is Interpol and Muse) Therefore, I don’t want Flow covering a song Phish already did because although I’m a Phish geek, I’m not the only one. I’m sure if they did said covers, there would be other people in the audience thinking “well, Phish did it already.”

The key is ORIGINALITY… which is kind of an oxy-moron when referring to covers.

But hey, don’t let Hillman and I being bitches ruin this thread. It had some steam. Let’s keep the ideas coming. Just think, maybe YOUR cover song idea will be playing while being hit in the face with hundreds of bouncy balls.

I wish Jane’s Addiction wasn’t already done because Mountain Song would be purty cool.

I also vote for …And Justice For All. METALLIDOWN, BITCH!

Apr 3, 11:58 AM
Marko

Holly crap i am just now reading this for the first time
Im speechless…….

Apr 3, 12:32 PM
J.Garcia

Oh, I forgot….

…Phish did Take Me To the River.

Wow… Marko is NEVER speechless.

Apr 3, 03:19 PM

Whiskey River? John the Fisherman? Working Class Hero? Space Oddity? just tossing those out there…

Oh and on the Phish thing, at a point they were more than great. But at this point in my life Flow is the only “jam Band” I think I could stomach. One main reason for this is yes Josh was/is influenced by Trey,(but more so influenced by some of the same influences as Trey) but Flowmotion always is unique. rocking-funkin-fusion that can never be pigeoned holed into noddled hippie shit.
So much of the new jamb band stuff is not unique different or from the soul, Like all phish post 1997ish. I guess maybe in reality I never was a jamb band fan, never liked The Dead (did like Jerry, and American Beauty was great) String cheese, or Moe, and the shit and I mean the shit out there now is carbon copy rip offs of Phish, Dave Mathews, MMW, WSP and even String Cheese as sick and disgusting as that cheese is. Now Richard Cheese, He rocks!
So yeah,my two cents. Josh will always keep the music real and from the soul, not for the dollar (b)ill’s.
peace

Apr 4, 06:15 AM

>>>So much of the new jamb band stuff is not unique different or from the soul, Like all phish post 1997ish<<<

I’ll agree with you on that BUT you listen to stuff like Anything But Me, All Of These Dreams, or Scents and Subtle Sounds and then tell me post ’97 Phish doesn’t have soul. That I gotta disagree on.

But yeah, anymore I’d MUCH rather be listening to MMJ, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Black Keys, Flaming Lips, Mars Volta more than I’d rather listen to “jam bands”, Phish included.

Two Things

1) That “Longtime” video is legendary. It’s got it all, the hair, the jeans, the Nike track jacket, the singer playing air toms…awesome.

2) Any discussion making fun of the music Andy listens to has to include the Bad Plus. Sorry if this offends you, it’s just how I feel

We didn’t play “Maybe your baby” @ Meltdown… it was @ The Jet…. and by the way Dirty Sanch, r u that bored u have 2 make me the president of the Duran Duran fan club? Like i am… No seriously…. Like i am… i am… i am…. NOT EVEN…Get a fucking job already.

Apr 6, 08:38 PM

Apr 7, 02:22 PM
Gerry

Garcia you are on crack. Dont ever mention Anything But Me or All of These Dreams as having anything positive associated with them.

Apr 8, 06:55 AM
J.Garcia

I didn’t SAY positive DID I???

I said those songs came from the soul.

Yes, I know they were written in the darker of times, therefore when performed I felt a LOT of soul and passion.

Quit putting words in my mouth, Gerry. Leave that for other things like Maker’s Mark and paper.

BTW, Trey wrote the lyrics of Anything But Me without Tom’s help (a rare occurance) after they got in a fight.

Apr 8, 06:58 AM
J.Garcia

Wait, you’re telling me these aren’t POSITIVE LYRICS??? o.k……..

Al Of These Dreams
————————————-

There is a place on the mountain near by
Deep in a cave but its up rather high
There in the darkness I safely concealed
All of the dreams that you never revealed

And if you go there, and after you do
All of these dreams would be yours to pursue
The rest of your lifetime, devoid of a care
If you keep your eyes open, you may find yourself there

Such is the promise, such is the curse
You could just live your life better or worse
Knowing the casual dreams up on that hill
Beckons and sways but won’t bend to your will
You might find a river under a mountain that
feeds a remote, subteranian fountain
drink from this taste just a hint of a dream
that some how leads in to the underground stream

And if you go there, and after you do
All of these dreams would be yours to pursue
The rest of your lifetime, devoid of a care
If you keep your eyes open, you may find yourself there
If you keep your heart open

I would love to see something heavy like “Iron Man”, “War Pigs”, or “Jesus Built my Hotrod” by Ministry. I love it when they break out the heavy cock rock. It just does something to me. It would be awesome to hear them break out into a heavy riff and then just fly right into it.

Apr 18, 02:13 PM
that_otherguy

“I Love You Always Forever” by Donna Lewis with RL on lead vocals. Just seems to fit…

Apr 19, 02:08 PM

“Dinah Moe Hum” would be another good one to dance to and would have lots of room for improvisation

May 12, 11:02 AM

“The Vagina Song” by the Bloodhound Gang

“The Match Game” theme song from the 70’s

“Fetish” by Joan Jett- damn, she is looking hot these days and now she dates chicks – any chance you all could get Joan Jett- that would be the ultimate girl to bring home to my hubbie—That would be awesome to get someone like Joan Jett

Not offended at all, Shelbi. Just didn’t know you were a Blackhearts fan.

May 13, 09:35 AM

Yeah, I am old. I also liked the Runaways as well. Lita Ford, and Joan Jett were a couple of my first girlie crushes besides wonder woman! I can’t resist a chick playing kick ass rock and roll!

Hey I was thinking the other day the perfect cover would be Funkadelic’s Who Says A Funk Band Can’t Play RocK?! from One nation Under a Groove.

Jun 27, 05:56 PM

It would be awesome if they found a fiddle player and covered “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. Or, in tribute to Jerry “Not Fade Away” would be cool too. I just want to see the band open up and rock our faces off. Something hard hitting and just fast and hard. That’s how I like it!!!

“I Can’t Find My Way Home”

Best cover request ever! Nice pull MB… obscure suggestion of a great song, that fits very nicely with Flowmotion’s sound too!

I say NO… they should save that one for us BC folks at Bonfire :)

“Fox On The Run” – Sweet
“Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’” -Stones
“White Light / White Heat” – Velvet Underground

But “Fame” kicked ass too. :)
