So this was posted today…………
Trey Anastasio (left) and Tom Marshall (right) perform together CAMDEN, NJ—Phish lyricist Tom Marshall, Trey Anastasio’s longtime friend and writing partner, said in an exclusive interview Tuesday that “Trey wants Phish to come back.” Marshall announced that he has been writing and recording with Anastasio at the Phish frontman’s personal Rubber Jungle studios in Saratoga Springs, New York “for the past four months.” “I think Phish is his baby,” said Marshall, speaking backstage after Dave Matthews Band’s Tuesday concert at Camden’s Susquehanna Bank Center. “It’s not like there are people preventing it from coming back, it’s just that the landscape has to be right for it to come back.” “I’ve always been hopeful in expecting a Phish,” continued Marshall. “I think if the stars align and everything works out there will be. I don’t think they will ever be a huge touring band.” All members of Phish—Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman, bassist Mike Gordon and keyboardist Page McConnell—appeared together at the Jammy Awards in New York on May 7 to accept a lifetime achievement award. Although Phish did not perform, Anastasio made a cameo appearance on-stage, performing a cover of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with a group of various artists. On May 21, Anastasio received a reduced sentence of three years’ probation for a 2007 drug conviction after completing a counseling and treatment program in Washington County, New York. Anastasio faced class D felony charges after he was arrested in Whitehall, New York in December 2006 with prescription medications prescribed to another person, including hydrocodone, Percocet and Xanax. “As one of his close friends, I’ll say he’s extremely happy,” said Marshall of Anastasio following last week’s ruling. “He’s come out the other side of this in the best way that someone can come out.” Marshall believes that Anastasio has “learned a lot” from his recent legal and personal issues. “It’s immeasurable what he’s learned,” said Marshall. Anastasio is slated to perform his first major public concert since his 2006 arrest on July 4th weekend at the inaugural Rothbury festival in Rothbury, Mich. Two other Phish members, drummer Jon Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon are also set to make appearances, albeit with separate acts. Marshall was elated about his recent work in the studio with Anastasio. “We’re on our fourteenth, fifteenth song in like two months,” said Marshall. “We’re extremely productive and got the drive again. I have the old Trey back, which is incredible.” When pressed about where these new songs will end up, Marshall said they “could take a left turn into the Trey Anastasio Band or a straight turn to Phish.” “(Trey) is just excited and happy to be done with his legal problems,” said Marshall. “It’s almost like we’re in 8th grade again.” Marshall, who began writing with Anastasio during adolescence while attending New Jersey’s Princeton Day School together, has penned over ninety original songs for Phish. During their recent sessions, Marshall said he sometimes plays drums and Anastasio, widely considered one of rock’s best guitarists, will even play the bass guitar at times during the writing and recording process. Marshall said that he and Anastasio “have a new energy, a spark.” “It’s spilling out of us. We’re both look wide-eyed when something meshes up because it’s meshing up a lot better these days then it did when we were under the fog, under the haze,” said Marshall. “We’re not in the haze. We’re just moving forward, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.” Marshall said that he and Anastasio have not brought other Phish members into the studio, yet. “We haven’t done that in the past and we work best when there are no distractions. When we write, we write together. What happens with songs after that is up to Trey, really.” “Reforming something like (Phish) has so many pieces, it’s a very complex, three-dimensional, four-dimensional, jigsaw puzzle,” said Marshall, adding “No one wants Phish back more than Trey.”
And this was from last week or so, from a Rolling Stone article…………..
Nearly four years after their break-up, the four members of Phish may have some unfinished business together. In an interview with Rolling Stone last week, Trey Anastasio didn’t exactly say the band has talked about a reunion, but he did drop some heavy hints. “When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”
LOOKS LIKE ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME!!!
saw both of those…they have alot to prove before im on board, in terms of song writing and performance after the most recent debacles.
I agree 100%, Ger. BUT, I have a hunch that if Trey gives Phish 3.0 a chance, it will be FUCKING stupendous. He’s sober, healthy, happy, and after his speech at the Jammys, it seems he now knows what Phish meant not just to us, but to him as well.
Agreed, but only if A) they practice, which I think they would do this time and B) Trey quits trying to write adult contemporary pop songs, which from Tom’s comments may actually be the case.
Think how many Bacon Carts we could sell to East Coast lot w00ks, lol
Trey, the guy who in the first place made the call to end Phish wants nothing more now than to bring them back? I don’t know. I spent my entire teenage years listening and going to see those guys. I just think it’s too soon. Coventry was too heavy for me. I just hope that if they are going to come back they focus their energy on writing more compositional material and leave the ‘connection’ ‘heavy things’ ‘jennifer dances’ ‘mexican cousin’ kind of material aside.
Trey IS PHISH. You can’t really knock him for doing what he feels necessary for not just the bands livelihood, but his own and his families. He was FUCKED on drugs, isn’t now, and wants to show the fanbase he can still throw down.
I can’t really even fathom being in those shoes. I’d probably be dead by now.
Dude, they played Jen Dances TWICE. I think they realized quickly enough what a stinker it was.
Gerry and I saw one (@ Hampton or Raleigh) and after they ended the song, everyone just laughed. That was the last time Jennifer “Danced”. I like The Connection, cool melody. Ya gotta realize he ain’t writing anymore YEM’s or Reba’s. But they’ll still kick the shit out of them live.
J, do you remember the girl that cried after the J-Dances because she was so touched :SpitsCokeOnScreen :FallsOverDyingOfLaughter.
But J, you are wrong one thing, the Connection sucks balls. Everyone realizes they are not writing YEM or REBA type comps, but that doesnt mean he has to write stuff that contempory chrinstian rock would laugh at i.e. Connection, Dragonfly, Shine, Anything but Me.
That said, Pebbles and Marbles is a masterpiece imo, Scents and Subtle sounds is pretty good, and Undermind (a short song) had some Dur-Tay potential…
I didn’t say The Connection was EPIC, I just said I like the melody. I know as a song it is purty geigh. YOU are wrong about one thing, Anything But Me is a good song. (IMO) Trey can’t write lyrics (see Shine and Dragonfly) but I like the lyrics in that ssong. He wrote them after a fight he had with Tom.
Yes, I remember the Jen Dances crying chick. It’s amazing we didn’t beat her up.
I heard them soundcheck Undermind twicve (though they never played it) and it was purty cool. Scents is an AMAZING song and yes, P&M is extraordinary, one of my favorite guitar lines Trey has written yet.
Trey could piss in Garcia’s ears and he’d think it had melody.
wow, clever. where did u get that analogy?
fuckstick
Interesting (if that IS your real name) that just isn’t true. I am as jaded a vet as anybody. I saw 100 shows on the nose and at around 40, you start becoming VERY critical of the band. I definetely have reservations about them coming back but part of me really thinks that this time Trey WILL get his chops back and WILL return with a vengeance. Hell, even if it sounds like Coventry, it’s still better than 75% of the swill (in the jamband world, anyway)that is out there today.
So, to quote ANOTHER line from Bittersweet…. “Kiss my ass, you fucking tool.”
Love me some annonomous interweb toughguy!
75% Swill? I don’t know ‘bout that. Phish was a great band and they put on some incredible shows but those seemed few and far between in their later days whereas bands like Panic consistently play spectacular shows and have very few that seem a little disappointing. But hey, that’s just my 2cents. The Bridge is ONE band that plays no Hippy JamBand Swill, those boys can play soulful bluesy music with a hint of gospel. That right there is 100% good music. PS. I didn’t post that pee pee stuff.
Sorry Oskar, but I’m over it. Don’t get me wrong, I love you guys, but for the most part, the whole jamband thing is dead to me. I’m WAY more interested in bands like The Mars Volta and My Morning Jacket (i was just telling you how kickass their new album is) than I am into Umphrey’s, STS9, or any of the “tier 2” jambands out there today. The way I look at it, Phish did it best.
Oh, and I likes me some Panic, too. That’s why I said 75%…. not 95.
Please put the disco biscuits and particle at the top of said Shwill list. Post-2000 SCI also belongs on the list.
TLG is the only new “jam band” I have heard on the national scene that I truly dig, its all about Trevor, that dude has got “it” imo, Have not heard The Bridge, but from what I have heard of them, they bring the real deal. To me the “jam band” term, lately, means you cant write a song worth a shit, but can play and noodle. By this rationale, niether Acorn of Flow fall into that category…There is a difference, imo, between bands that improv/jam and jam bands that improv without a purpose or without the foundation of decent songs…..Most post-98 phish falls into the latter category as well in hindsight.
I could go on and on but whats the point. Trey and phish were so much more and that is why we/you all are bitching 15+ years after we saw what at the time and still was one of the greatest musical experience possible. Panic, mathews, blues travler all that were jam bands, phish was more. Now the Jam bands are total garbage, but yeah hopefully trey and phish can rock again. but more importantly this is a flowmotion forum and lets hope that they get back to being more than a jam band. Jesse is a great first step. The last year and especially 6 months have been a downer in my opinion for flow. bring back the funk!! get rid of the one demesional “swill” we’ve been hearing lately, please. PS: cant wait for the Meltdown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude put the crack pipe down, Flowmotion has never sounded better than they have in the last year…..One dimensional, seriously, lots of crack….
